How long does teeth whitening last?
Teeth whitening results will vary from patient to patient, but a single teeth whitening treatment can last anywhere from six months upwards. To prolong your results, Dr Paul Trembath advises patients to:
- Reduce how much coffee, tea, and red wine you consume
- Choose a healthy diet low in sugar
- Avoid sugar drinks like soda
- Brush your teeth with a dentist recommended brand
- Chew sugar free gum to help fight off plaque
- Visit our office every six months for a professional clean
How do teeth whiten?
Teeth whitening is actually quite a simple process. Teeth whitening products contain one of two tooth whiteners, hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These whiteners get down into the tooth enamel and will set off a chemical reaction to break the tooth stains into smaller pieces, which will make the stains less concentrated and your teeth brighter.
Does brushing your teeth whiten them?
Your teeth are naturally a shade of white, but can discolour and turn yellow even if you brush them regularly. This happens because the outside enamel develops small cracks and crevices that can trap debris. The dentin underneath that is naturally yellow can start to show through as this enamel wears down. Unfortunately, sometimes regular brushing isn’t enough to keep teeth the brightest shade of white.
What’s the difference between over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments and Philips Zoom! Teeth Whitening?
Most over the counter teeth whitening products take on a ‘one size fits all’ approach. With the Philips Zoom! Teeth Whitening treatment it’s tailored to your needs, by your own dentist. Custom fitted trays are created to ensure each tooth is whitened evenly. One of the main difference between the two treatments is the Philips Zoom! Teeth Whitening treatment is applied by a highly skilled professional with years of experience, in a controlled and sterile environment.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Professional teeth whitening is a far better option than over-the-counter teeth whitening products because a dentist is qualified to assess the health of your teeth. Another benefit is, they can asses whether you need teeth whitening or not. For patients who do, dentists are allowed to use a higher concentration of peroxide to give you a whiter smile faster. They can also assess underlying problems that may cause your discolouration.
How effective is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is very effective on extrinsic stains which are caused when the outside enamel of your teeth is discoloured. Unfortunately, dental prosthetics such as crowns or veneers cannot be whitened. Dr Paul Trembath is able to use the highest-grade teeth whitening products in his practice to ensure you obtain maximum whitening results.
Case Study 8
Teeth can become increasingly yellow-brown in colour as the enamel of our teeth becomes more translucent with age. External staining from coffee, tea, red wine and smoking contributes to our teeth becoming dim. Tooth whitening can reverse this process and make out teeth appear whiter and brighter. It is a proven, safe proceedure if supervised by an experienced dentist. At PTD we favor a home bleeching technique as it avoids in most cases the tooth sensitivity that is commonly produced by the in-office power bleeching that is offered by some dentists.
